UD Trucks boost for MAC TRANSCO fleet

Prominent Limpopo-based transport and logistics company, MAC Transco, has acquired 27 UD 460 WTs to transport coal over short and long haul distances.

Supplied and supported by BB Truck and Tractor in Polokwane, who has been in operation since 1959, the company also has 30 additional units on order for 2011.

Since its inception in 1982, MAC positioned itself as an all-round freight logistics provider, rather than just focusing on selective transport solutions.   Their extensive list of services include: Road maintenance; earth moving; bulk transport; warehouse facilities; container depot; industrial property development; as well as the import and export of various commodities.

According to Les Greene, dealer principal at BB Truck & Tractor, the UD 460 WTs utilised by MAC have all been fitted with side tippers for the effective offloading of coal on site.

“In order to provide the best possible service, BB Truck and Tractor will also be supporting MAC’s operations from its workshops in Musina and Lephalale.  By offering full truck maintenance services at our conveniently located workshops, we will help ensure that the wheels of MAC’s trucks keep turning, saving them valuable time and money.”

Greene said he believes the UD 460 WTs will prove their mettle in even the toughest of operating conditions.

The UD 460 WT is the embodiment of outstanding extra heavy commercial vehicle features, and is characterised by design that contributes to low lifecycle costs and reduced mechanical strain.  These are achieved mainly through the utilisation of a low wind-resistance cabin, a new generation unit injector in the GE13 engine, and low fuel consumption through increased combustion efficiency.

The 13-litre GE13 engine boasts 340kW of power at 1 800rpm and 2 256Nm of torque at 1 200rpm, providing a powerful all-round performance.

As one of UD Trucks Southern Africa’s long-established dealerships, BB Truck & Tractor places great emphasis on building long-term relationships with their customers and providing ongoing support throughout a product’s lifecycle.

“We believe that the UD Trucks range offers customers versatility, quality and Ultimate Dependability when our customers need it most,” said Greene.  “We are very proud to be associated with a company of MAC Transco’s caliber and are looking forward to building a long and successful partnership with them going into the future.”

According to City Courier's managing director, Rajesh Dayamund, when it was time to supplement their existing fleet of 340 vehicles, the company looked for a truck manufacturer with whom they could build a long-term relationship with. "As these units will operate around the country, we also needed a supplier who would be able to provide technical support on a national basis.  We believe we have found such a partner in UD Trucks," said Dayamund.

City Couriers provides nationwide distribution and warehousing services for selected retail stores, like Mr Price, Makro, Spar and Game, and employs 1 500 people at 14 branches across South Africa.

Anthony Naicker, the company's national fleet manager, said that he believes the UD Trucks units will be well-suited to the operating and road conditions for which they are intended.  "Obviously, only time will tell the true value of these units, but we do believe the vehicles will offer us continued reliability and quality, backed by the UD Trucks dealer network's value added service support."

UD Trucks’ range for its HCVs is fully compliant to Euro II emission regulations and are electronically controlled and deliver a powerful performance.  In addition, it allows for a quick throttle response, reliability, and has an aneroid compensator for high altitude operation.

The FE6TB engine doing service on the UD80 and UD90 delivers 175kW of power and 660Nm.  It utilises 4-valve technology, an electronically controlled governor, as well as the TICS injection pump.

Both units are geared to achieve excellent fuel consumption and gradeability, ensuring that a high average speed is attained to boost productivity.

These units' optimised wheelbases make them ideal for a range of applications; which include freight carriers that can be fitted with virtually any rear body, a dedicated tipper or compactor, as well as conversion to truck tractors.  Tag axle options on the UD90 allow for operation as a 6x2 with additional payload capability.

The class-leading performance of these units is achieved by the unique combination of engine power, transmission ratios and final drive ratio.  With its proven flexibility and durability, this series is especially suited to meet the needs of the distribution, waste, dairy and freight industries.
